I use a grunt call throughout the season!  I tend to use it more during the pre rut, rut, and late season.  Deer tend to respond positively or ignore grunt calls. The exceptions to this is if the call is too loud for the distance, wind noise, etc., between the hunter and deer or if the deer has already been alerted.  

I always take a grunt call hunting!   May not use it, but it’s a tool I want available.
