Growing Deer TV Team,
First of all thank you for your testimony and help that you have offered to so many people! I’m from west central Missouri but have been living in Ireland for the past 3 years working with an outdoor program. (info@wilderness.ie) The forest we are located in is a 25-30 year old spruce plantation and we will be doing some thinning in the next few years. I was just curious if there is any suggestion that you may have to help stumps to rot faster or if it would be better to completely remove them where possible? Thanks for any help you can give.

Blessings,
Duane

Duane,

Thank you for sharing the kind words!  If the thinning is standard timber stand improvement work and crops, etc., aren’t to be replanted then I wouldn’t worry about the stumps. If you wish to plant a crop for wildlife and the crop isn’t to be mechanically harvested, then I typically plant around the stumps. I either use a no-till drill that is small enough to fit in between the rows or broadcast the lime, fertilizer, and seed.  I’ve been testing a no-till drill made by http://www.Redexim.com in Holland.  I’ve been very pleased with the drill.

If a crop is to be planted and mechanically harvested the best practice will be to have the stumps removed with a trackhoe, etc.

Enjoy creation,

grant
